“After extensive searches, the police service's marine unit recovered the body of the second juvenile,” Ottawa police announced Thursday evening. We extend our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and everyone affected by this tragic loss.”

The search began Wednesday evening when authorities were called to Nicolls Island Road around 9:45 p.m. when four teenagers had fallen under the ice on the Rideau River.

Two of the young people were immediately rescued and taken to hospital.

But the other two, 16 and 17 years old, weren't so lucky. The remains of one of them were recovered that same evening.

Ottawa police said they conducted an underwater rescue operation, including at night, “under very difficult conditions.”
