The accident occurred around 3 p.m. on the Chemin des Suisses, at the intersection with the Chemin Brassard, in Saint-Zénon, a municipality of about 1,200 residents north of the Sept-Chutes regional park.
“The driver of one of the vehicles with two passengers on board lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons on a curve and collided with the other vehicle that was traveling in the opposite direction,” said Sergeant Béatrice Dorsainville, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
The 17-year-old driver was taken to hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. His two passengers, ages 16 and 19, suffered serious injuries, but their lives were not in danger, according to authorities.
The man behind the wheel of the other vehicle, an octogenarian, was seriously injured, but his life was not in danger.
Provincial police investigations into this matter are ongoing. Chemin Brassard was also closed to traffic for part of the afternoon to allow SQ staff time to carry out their analysis work.
