Argentina will definitely not join the BRICS group, the Argentine government said in a letter rejecting the invitation to join the group.
The document is dated December 22nd, but was only published this Friday, December 29th, three days before the scheduled entry date, January 1st.
“As you know, the foreign policy of the government I headed a few days ago differs in many aspects from that of the previous government. In this sense, some decisions of the previous government are being reviewed,” said Argentine President Javier Milei (photo) in the letter.
“This includes the creation of a special unit for the country’s active participation in the Brics states, as announced by former President Alberto Fernández in a letter dated September 4,” he adds.
According to Milei, “the incorporation of the Argentine Republic into the BRICS as a full member from January 1, 2024 is not considered opportune.”
The letter was addressed to the heads of state of the BRICS member countries, including Lula.

Argentina is one of six countries invited to the latest BRICS summit in August in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The other guests are all autocracies or governments in crisis: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Iran and Ethiopia.
No one declined the invitation and therefore everyone must join the group from January 1st.
Since the elections, in addition to announcing that Argentina would not join the Brics, Milei also expressed his opposition to Argentina joining the Brics.
Already in the interim government, the now swornin future Chancellor Diana Mondino had expected to reject the invitation.
This scenario, which involves a group that is more ideological than pragmatic, is completely different from that of Mercosur.
