Venice bans tourist groups of more than 25 people news

In the fight against the negative effects of mass tourism, the city of Venice prohibits tourist groups of more than 25 people accompanied by tour guides. This was decided by the City Council at its last meeting and announced today. This measure affects the city center and the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello. Loudspeakers will be banned on city tours in the future.

The measures come into force on June 1, 2024. The objective is to promote sustainable tourism and guarantee the protection and safety of the city, said Security Councilor Elisabetta Pesce. Furthermore, “a signal is being sent against unauthorized tourist guides,” added Sebastiano Costalonga, councilor responsible for commerce.

Meanwhile, Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro signed a decree to protect public safety on New Year's Eve. From December 31st to January 1st, 2024, at 6am, shops, bars and outdoor stalls will not be able to sell or serve drinks in glass bottles, sealed cans and plastic bottles. It is also prohibited to consume any type of drink on the street.
