A 29yearold woman who once claimed “she was too pretty to be arrested” has been sentenced to life in prison in the US over the death of her own mother. Hend Karim Bustami, who made the unusual statement while jailed for failing to pay the bill at a restaurant a month before the murder, will remain in prison for at least 15 years before being eligible for parole.
Hend's sentence was announced on Tuesday 26th following a decision by a judge in Las Vegas in the United States. The defendant was previously convicted by a popular jury last March. She has been in prison since October 2022, when she informed police that she had murdered her own mother.
The crime occurred last October in Barstow, California. That's when Hend called the police and told them that her mother, Afaf Hussanen, 62, was dead and that she was the one who committed the crime. The prosecution played the defendant's call to the authorities for the jury.
“Do you need the police, fire department or ambulance,” an officer asked. “From the ambulance, I think I killed my mom,” Hend replied. “Why do you think you killed your mother?” the police officer asked. “Because yes. I killed her,” he concluded.
Hend initially pleaded not guilty, but later stated she was “guilty but mentally ill.” The court assumed the woman was stable enough to go before the jury, but her defense presented testimony from a psychiatrist who said the defendant suffered from intermittent psychosis.
The prosecution also recalled the moment Hend took his mother's life. After an alleged argument over cigarettes, the daughter hit Afaf on the head with a piece of glass and stabbed her. Police have been to the home where the two lived seven times following reports of domestic violence.
“Too beautiful to get arrested”
In the episode at Las Vegas International Airport, a month before her mother was murdered, Hend accused the police officers who responded to a call from restaurant management of being “perverts” and accused them of “trying to rape her because she “had never seen a woman before”. as beautiful as she is.
