The death toll from yesterday's suspected Israeli airstrikes against pro-Iranian militias in eastern Syria has risen to 25. The attacks carried out on Saturday targeted pro-Iranian militia positions in the Syrian town of al-Bu Kamal and a convoy from neighboring Iraq, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
The victims include 20 foreign fighters, four of them from the Iran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah movement, and five Syrians. Yesterday the British-based watchdog said at least 19 militants had been killed in the attacks.
If confirmed, the strikes would be the first by Israeli warplanes in eastern Syria since the Gaza war broke out on October 7, Observatory head Rami Abdel-Rahman said. According to the Observatory, which has been tracking victims of the Syrian civil war since 2011, Israel has carried out 45 attacks in Syria since the Gaza war began.
