UPDATE: Service on the Northeast Corridor has resumed with 45-minute delays, NJ Transit said around 8:15 a.m

NJ Transit train service on the Northeast Corridor line to and from New York Penn Station was suspended early Sunday due to Amtrak signal problems.

The agency announced the closure between New York and Trenton shortly after 5:30 a.m. on a key travel day for New Year's Eve celebrations in the city.

Midtown Direct rail service will be rerouted to Hoboken, where PATH service is available. NJ Transit train tickets are honored by PATH at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken and 33rd Street stations in Manhattan.

The signal problems are also affecting Atlantic City Line trains. Service on this line between Cherry Hill and Philadelphia's 30th Street Station has been suspended. Tickets are collected by PATCO at Lindenwold train station.

North Jersey Coast Line trains will operate between Bay Head and Avenel, while Raritan Valley service will operate between Raritan and Cranford.

Around midnight on Sunday, service was delayed by 60 minutes before being reduced to 30 minutes.

Amtrak trains are operating, but are experiencing delays of up to two hours, according to an 8:15 a.m. statement.

“We are currently experiencing server/signal issues in the Northeast Corridor,” Amtrak said in a statement. “Trains are delayed in departure and run at reduced speeds. Longer delays are to be expected.”

Amtrak operates the NJ Transit train tracks between New York City and Trenton.
