Queen Margaret of Denmark announced this Sunday that she will abdicate on January 14th after 52 years on the throne. The 83-year-old monarch will be succeeded by her eldest son, Crown Prince Friedrich.
The Queen of Denmark's announcement came during her New Year's address. Two years ago, Margaret II celebrated her 50th anniversary on the throne, making her Europe's only and longest-living monarch after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
He underwent successful back surgery last February. “The operation made me think about the future. “If the time had come to leave the responsibility to the next generation,” he said in his speech. “I decided that now is the right time. “On January 14, 2024, 52 years after succeeding my beloved father, I will step down as Queen of Denmark,” she added.
“I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Friedrich,” he added. Margarita was born in 1940 and throughout her life enjoyed the broad support of Danes, who appreciated her discreet and creative personality.
