The chancellor of a US university was fired after his adult content channel came to light. Joe Gow had been at the helm of the University of WisconsinLa Crosse since 2007 and was informed of his dismissal in a letter. In an interview, he says that the case violates his constitutional rights but that he must continue to teach at the institution as a full professor.
Joe and his wife Carmen Wilson, a former professor at the same university, have produced videos for adult content platforms and published two books about relationships and their experiences in the world of the porn industry. He told NBC that the productions were made as a private individual and that the university was never mentioned on his channels.
The books themselves were signed with pseudonyms, but the couple also didn't make a point of hiding their identities on social media. Joe and Carmen use their real photos on the channels where they produce content. They also produce interview videos with adult film actors and producers.
According to the former chancellor, the dismissal, which took place immediately by decision of the university's administrative board, violates his right to freedom of expression enshrined in the 1st Amendment to the US Constitution.
University President Jay Rothman issued a statement on behalf of the institution calling the former chancellor's actions “abhorrent.” Rothman said Joe Gow damaged the university's reputation. The president also reportedly called for a review of Gow's status as a tenured faculty member.
This isn't the first time Joe Gow has caused controversy at the University of WisconsinLa Crosse. In 2016, he invited porn actress Nina Hartley to speak at a Free Expression Week event. At the time, he explained that the invitation was in line with the event's proposal.
