Tsunami alert in Japan after major earthquake, waves of 5 meters expected

JAPAN – The year 2024 begins with a major event in Japan: On Monday, January 1st, a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 shook the center of the country. Japanese authorities immediately issued a tsunami warning and ordered people in the affected area to seek refuge on higher ground.

“All residents should be evacuated to higher ground immediately,” national broadcaster NHK said after the earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture at around 4:10 p.m. (local time).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) based in Hawaii (USA) warned that dangerous waves of up to five meters high were now “possible” within a radius of 300 kilometers from the epicenter.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that waves could be up to five meters high.
