The Canadiens scored one of the strangest goals of the season tonight, taking a 2-0 lead over the Lightning in the second period.
It all started when Montreal goaltender Samuel Montembeault held the puck for a few moments before handing it off to teammate Johnathan Kovacevic. The Lightning players, including goaltender Jonas Johansson, believed the referee had called a stoppage in play while Montembeault retained the puck.
But this was not the case. And while the Lightning players and goalkeeper quietly retreated to the bench, Kovacevic shot into an abandoned net.
The referees reviewed the sequence and determined that the goal was actually good, drawing the ire of Lightning fans for several minutes.
