Leafs release Samsonov on waivers

The Toronto Maple Leafs granted goaltender Ilya Samsonov a waiver on Sunday. The latter is having a disastrous season.

The Russian has faced a relentless barrage of criticism since his last appearance, a 5-6 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Head coach Sheldon Keefe even said after the game that his team needed stops and that his general manager Brad Treliving needed to weigh all options.

Samsonov, once a promising young goalie who was selected in the first round (22nd overall) by the Washington Capitals in 2015, has some of the worst stats posted by a goalie in the salary cap era: a 3.94 goals-against average and an efficiency ratio of .862.

The Maple Leafs are still waiting for the return of their starter Joseph Woll, who suffered an ankle injury.

Additionally, the Buffalo Sabers also placed a goalie, Eric Comrie, on waivers on Sunday.
