The leader of South Korea's opposition party was stabbed in the neck on Tuesday by a man who lunged at him during a news conference.

A graphic video shows Lee Jae-myung being attacked during a visit to the southern port city of Busan.

The attacker has yet to be named. Lee, the leader of the main opposition Democratic Party, on Saturday rejected calls from former party leader Lee Nak-yon to resign.

The 59-year-old politician had been touring the construction site of a new airport on Gadeok Island and was targeted during a question-and-answer session with reporters.

Lee was seen lying on the floor with his eyes closed and the hands of other people around him pressing a tissue to the side of his neck.

The attack occurred as the politician was touring the construction site of a new airport in Busan on January 2 (pictured).

The head of the largest opposition Democratic Party was transported to a hospital, the Yonhap news agency said.

It was also said that the attacker was overpowered and arrested at the scene.

Just three days ago, Lee Jae-myung announced that he would organize a breakfast meeting with former South Korean Democratic Party chairman Lee Nak-yon.

The event was scheduled amid increasing calls from Lee Nak-yon for Lee Jae-myung's resignation.
