The annual New Year's Day is a lively event where more than 10,000 adults and children parade through the city streets in colorful costumes.

The event is considered the longest-running traditional folk parade in the country and is compared in many ways to Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

“A mummer is defined as “any man, woman or child who engages in the fantasy of song, dance and costume splendor at Philadelphia’s annual New Year’s Day parade on January 1 each year,” said Rusty Martz, chairman of the board of the Mummers Museum said Penn Live.

Martz explained that Mummers spend an entire year working on their costumes and skits and perfecting their performance.

The first official Philadelphia Mummers Parade began in 1901. This year marks its 124th anniversary.

This year's parade, which began at 9 a.m., began at 17th and Market through City Hall and Broad Street to Washington Avenue.

Those who watched the video had mixed reactions.

“He stuck the flag right in his face, loser,” one person quipped.

Someone added: “To be fair, Mummer touched him with the flag.” “I have every right to take it away at this point.”

Another said: “Just me… but it looks like the bastard deliberately waved/draped the flag in the person's face. 'I would have snapped too.'

One respondent said: “For those who have never attended a mummers pageant… there may have been alcohol involved.”

Someone, visibly disturbed by what was happening, asked, “What's wrong with people?” then asked, “What happened to the 1st Amendment?”

Then there were some who were unfamiliar with the annual parade and had no idea what a mummer was and asked, “Why do they wear dresses?”
