They left Blizzard to create the game of their dreams. And they collected more than a million euros for it. The players are already convinced!
From Starcraft 2 to Stormgate
Starcraft II is one of those games that made history. It's impossible to be a fan of real-time strategy games and never have heard of the Blizzard juggernaut with more than 6 million units sold. And to play a great game you need great men. Obviously we find industry veterans behind Starcraft 2: Tim Morten, James Anhalt, Jesse Brophy, Ryan Schutter, Joseph Shunk… And these veterans eventually left Blizzard to form their own studio in 2020: Frost Giant Studios. Behind the founding of this studio is an ambitious dream: to develop the “next big real-time strategy game”.
This game is Stormgate. As you have probably understood, this is a real-time strategy game that is said to be particularly advanced. But what else do we know about the title? Well, it will be a free game with some of the content monetized, as is now done a lot for this type of game. As for the universe, Stormgate is a science fantasy game set 100 years in the future in a post-post-apocalypse world. Does the project appeal to you and make you want to do it? Know that it is already possible to do your part!
A project worth more than a million
To finance the project, the teams at Frost Giant Studios decided to launch a Kickstarter campaign. The latter was released on December 6th and has largely found its audience. In less than 24 hours, the project raised $700,000, reaching its first milestone. Almost a month later, the prize pool has been depleted. The $1.7 million threshold was exceeded a few days before the end of 2023. As we write these lines, almost 19,000 contributors have raised no less than 1,589,024 euros. And if you want, you can still participate for 30 days.
FYI: Stormgate launched a closed beta earlier this month. The latter includes a 1v1 multiplayer mode and a three-player cooperative mode against the computer. For the rest, we will probably have to wait until summer 2024 to discover the early access of the title. Keep an eye on it!
