The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt served as the basis for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. A wish from the game director Motomu Toriyama.

Was The Witcher 3 an inspiration for FF7 Rebirth? When we asked the question to FF7 Rebirth co-director Motomu Toriyama, he didn't hesitate for a second. During an interview with GameInformer, the creator named the third adventure of Geralt of Rivia as his favorite RPG (apart from the Final Fantasy series, of course).

We've done extensive research on titles like The Witcher 3, which has an open-world RPG element. The game served as a basis for the work and this type of content would be satisfying for Final Fantasy Rebirth players -Motumu Toriyama

Originally released in May 2015, The Witcher 3 is considered a benchmark for action-adventure role-playing games (92/100 for the PS4 version on Metacritic). In 2023, the title surpassed 50 million copies sold. Even eight years after its publication, it continues to be updated regularly.

Citing The Witcher 3 and open worlds as inspiration, Motomu Toriyama implies an even larger playing field than FF7 Remake, with new cities to explore.

In an interview with the same magazine, Naoki Hamaguchi, also head of the project, revealed the name of one of these new cities: The Nest of the Crown. Iconic locations from the first game will also be included, such as Kalm, Junon, Canyon and Nibelheim.

In the same article, Motomu Toriyama mentions a card game called “Queen's Blood” that is reminiscent of a certain Gwent from The Witcher 3.

There is a huge amount of cards, enough to be a game in its own right (…) It's a game based on strategy and thinking, but I saw some gameplay towards the end of the game when you had all the cards, It has the potential to be a very fast game.

Square Enix's goal is to also expand the side quests by providing greater scope, a desire that was reinforced after criticism on this topic in Final Fantasy 16.

What we already know

Final Fantasy Rebirth is the direct sequel to Final Fantasy Remake, a reboot of the game originally released in 1997. The first part takes place in Midgar, and in this sequel Cloud and his friends flee the city, still under the threat of Sephiroth. The game has moved away from traditional “turn-based” gameplay and now focuses on action-oriented gameplay. Just like its predecessor, the title will not follow the main plot, with the same story straying even further from the base material, which seems to mix multiple timelines. Several paths lead to the forgotten capital, the city of the ancient Cetra civilization, where one of FF7's most memorable moments takes place. Tetsuya Nomura, “creative director of the game,” also clarified that player progress in Final Fantasy VII Remake will not be retained in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The game will be released as a PS5 exclusive on February 29, 2024.
