The Boca Juniors began this Tuesday, January 2nd, their preparation for the season for 2024, the year in which they will compete not only for the Argentine Professional League but also in internal tournaments and the Copa Sudamericana. Who is Diego Martínez, the new coach of Boca Juniors?
Diego Hernan Martinez (45) is a former Argentine player who played for several clubs in the second division of Argentina, including Estudiantes, All Boys and Morón. In addition, he played for Aurora in Guatemala and even came to Europe, where he defended the jersey of Pierikos and Diagoras of Greece. He retired in 2011 and began working as a coach in the youth teams of Boca Juniors.
After his first steps in the Xeneize team, Martínez accepted his first challenge as coach of Ituzaingó in his country's fifth division. He then moved to Caueñas in the fourth division; Communications in the third division, Ferrocarril Midland in the fourth and Estudiantes in the third and second divisions respectively,
It wasn't until August 2020 that he would gain his first experience in the first division with Godoy Cruz. However, the same year he was forced to resign after failing to win a game. In January 2021, he would take over as coach of Tigre, which was playing in the second division at the time and with whom he would achieve promotion after a final win against Barracas Central.
This success would entitle him to extend his contract with Tigre and with which he would reach the final of the League Cup, where he would lose 0-3 to Boca Juniors. Despite achieving a historic qualification for the Copa Sudamericana, he would experience a series of poor results and eventually leave the club to join Huracán in July 2023.
At the Globe, Diego Martínez did not perform particularly well and even struggled to stay until the end of the year. Finally, he agreed with the management to terminate his contract and sign with Boca Juniors for 2024.
