France closes its embassy in Niger due to a diplomatic crisis

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the embassy's activities will continue from this capital in order to maintain relations with French citizens present in the African country of the Sahel.

The Quai d'Orsay also assured that it would maintain relations with non-governmental organizations in the humanitarian sector and continue to finance them.

At the end of December, France brought forward the closure of its embassy in Niger, a country from which the last French soldiers of the anti-terror operation Barkhane withdrew on December 22, troops that had left Mali and Burkina Faso months earlier.

The new authorities called for France to withdraw from its control over Niger, accusing the country of interference in their internal affairs and its sole interest in controlling strategic resources in the former West African colony, particularly uranium and gold.

In the first months, President Emmanuel Macron opposed the end of the French presence there, but given the development of events, in September he announced the return of troops and declared Ambassador Sylvain Itté persona non grata.

In its statement today, the Foreign Ministry accused the military junta of making it impossible to maintain the diplomatic mission through a blockade around the embassy and restrictions on its staff, which it called “a blatant violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.” .
