Air Canada ranked last among the top ten most punctual airlines in North America last year.
According to data from Cirium, only 63.17% of Air Canada's 376,451 flights in 2023 arrived on schedule.
This is an on-time rate that is 5% lower than that of No. 9-ranked JetBlue Airways (68.33%) and more than 20% lower than that of North American champion Delta Air Lines (84.72%).
The only other Canadian airline included in this top 10, WestJet, reported an on-time rate of 69.29%.
On average, in 2023, 74.45% of the approximately 8.4 million flights from the 10 airlines included in the list arrived on time. This is a quota almost the same as last year, although the total was increased by 400,000 flights.
improvement
Even though their results were below the average of the competition, WestJet and Air Canada can boast of a significant improvement in their results. In 2022, the Calgary-based company took 9th place in the rankings with an on-time rate of 59.1%, while the Montreal-based airline was again in last place with an on-time rate of 54.51%.
The two companies thus improved their punctuality rate by around 10 points, after a year in 2022 that was characterized by a resumption of chaotic travel at airports.
“It is clear that [2023] was a significant year for the aviation industry, particularly for North American airlines. […] The industry faced a variety of challenges, including a sustained surge in travel demand post-pandemic, pressure on airport infrastructure, labor shortages and rising fuel prices. analyzed James Hertzel, marketing director at Cirium, in the company's report.
