Jack Black joins Jason Momoa in the promising live-action adaptation of the video game Minecraft.
With this, the 54-year-old actor completes his series of role adaptations from video games. In Minecraft he will be Steve, one of the game's “skins”.
Jack Black is not idle: he played the role of Bowser in Super Mario Bros., the film (the second highest grossing of 2023). He also appeared in Jumanji: Next Level and will appear in the action film based on the video game Borderlands, which is scheduled to hit theaters in August. And to everyone's delight, he doubles Po in Kung Fu Panda 4, released in France on March 27, 2024.
In the live-action adaptation of Minecraft, Jack Black will be directed by Jared Hess, with whom he previously worked on the comedy Nacho Libre (2006). Since the project's inception (2015), several director names have been suggested, many details are still unclear. So while some newspapers credit Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer as screenwriters, others insist that we do not know the identity of the screenwriters or the content of the script. Is the 2019 summary still valid? It tells the story of a teenage girl and a group of adventurers on their journey to save the world of Overworld from the evil Ender Dragon.
On the casting side, alongside Jason Momoa, who is also involved in the production with Warner Bros., which holds the rights, Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple) and Emmy Myers (Wednesday) are also involved. Other names are circulating but have not been confirmed.
While this highly anticipated film adaptation of the game, created by Markus “Notch” Persson in Sweden in 2011 with developer Mojang Studios, is vague, if not enigmatic, an exact release date has been announced: April 4, 2025. Filming should will begin soon in New Zealand, assures Deadline.
In any case, Jack Black must be free in the spring! He tours Europe with his heavy metal band Tenacious D.
