Gypsy Rose Blanchard says she regrets plotting to murder her mother Claudine “Dee Dee” Blanchard.
In a new interview with People, Gypsy — who was released on parole last week after serving eight years for the second-degree murder of her mother — reflected on her emotional state at the time.
“It was panic, desperation,” Gypsy told People. “Because I was about to have another surgery and I really didn’t want to have that surgery.”
The 32-year-old said she was scheduled to undergo throat surgery to find out the cause of her high-pitched voice, which she said could be due to a breathing problem.
Although she expressed that she did not want the surgery, Gypsy said her mother did not heed her objections.
“She says, 'You've got it,' and that's it. There is no reason for discussion. And I felt in my heart: Please change your mind. This life has to change,” Gypsy said.
In 2015, Gypsy asked her then-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to kill her mother, according to People.
Dee Dee was widely believed to be suffering from Munchausen by Proxy, a rare mental illness in which a caregiver feigns symptoms of illness.
According to Gypsy, Dee Dee subjected her to years of painful and unnecessary medical treatments, even forcing her to use a wheelchair and feeding tubes, according to People.
“It's not that I haven't considered every other option besides murder. That’s what I did,” Gypsy said.
However, she's not sure what she would have done if she had a second chance to relive her life.
“If I had the chance to do it all over again, I don't know if I would go back to my childhood and tell my aunts and uncles that I'm not sick and Mom is making me sick,” she told People. “Or if I went back to the exact point of that conversation with Nick and told him, 'You know what, I'm going to tell the police everything.' I kind of struggle with that.”
Although she tries to move forward with her life, she still feels remorse for her actions.
“No one will ever hear me say that I’m glad she’s dead or that I’m proud of what I did,” Gypsy said. “I regret it every day.”
