Prohiben en Francia manifestaciones frente al Consejo Constitucional

Noboa could include more questions in Ecuador's popular consultation

Quito, January 4 (Prensa Latina) The President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, said today that he could send further questions to the Constitutional Court that could be included in his proposal for a referendum.

In an interview with Radio Sucre, the president added that he was open to dialogue, but stressed that he would not accept proposals that harmed citizens, such as “criticism without alternative.”

The Andean ruler's reform proposal has provoked differing opinions in this South American country, with many deeming it inappropriate and unpredictable.

In this sense, several MEPs considered that this referendum must be carefully analyzed by Parliament, since, according to legislators, what matters is not only the wording of the questions, but also the understanding of the scope of its annexes.

For MP Gissela Garzón, of the Citizen Revolution Movement (RC), the questions of the consultation do not respond to the needs of this South American nation and she clarified that the questions raise reforms of laws already being discussed in the National Assembly.

This Wednesday, the head of government justified his proposal for a referendum as a solution to the economic crisis, insecurity and unemployment here.

In a message on the national network, the young businessman explained that the referendum will focus on three objectives: the intervention of the armed forces in the fight against crime, supporting the justice system so that those convicted receive higher sentences, and promoting employment through recruitment and economic activity .

Meanwhile, the Regional Human Rights Advisory Foundation (Inredh) called on the Ecuadorian court not to give in to the consultation “due to the insignificance of the issues and the economic impact on the state budget.”

The judicial authority has 20 days to make a decision on the initiative of the head of government and, if approved, it will be up to the National Electoral Council to call Ecuadorians to the polls.
