Lawyers for former US President Donald Trump asked the US Supreme Court on Wednesday to review the Colorado case and overturn their decision to remove Mr Trump from the Republican primary. It says this is “the first time in the history of the United States that the judicial system has prevented voters from casting their ballot for a major party’s primary presidential candidate.”
The document submitted to the US Supreme Court emphasizes that resolving this issue is necessary as the Republican primary for the November 2024 presidential election approaches.
On December 19, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Donald Trump was ineligible for the presidency because of his actions during the storming of the Capitol. At that time, there was an order to withdraw ballots in his name from the Republican primary for the 2024 presidential election in that state.
The state of Maine was also of the opinion that the Republican favorite for the US presidential election was not “fit to be president” for the same reasons. Both Maine and Colorado based their decisions on the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which exempts from public liability anyone who commits acts of “rebellion” or “discrimination” after taking an oath to defend the Constitution.
Recall that on January 6, 2021, hundreds of Donald Trump supporters violently stormed the Capitol to prevent the certification of Democrat Joe Biden's victory. Following the events, more than a hundred police officers were injured and one woman died.
