A dog named Cecil, a pet Goldendoodle in Pittsburgh, confused his owners Clayton and Carrie Law when he took $4,000 in cash. The unusual incident, which occurred last month, occurred when the dog devoured money that was lying on the family's kitchen counter. reported the Washington Post.

Clayton Law, 34, had withdrawn money from their joint savings account to pay for the installation of a fence on his home. But just 30 minutes after returning from the bank with the money, sevenyearold Cecil had chewed up the notes, leaving a mess of torn paper behind.

The couple contacted their veterinarian to rule out any risks to the animal's health and were advised that given Cecil's size, weighing around 45 kilograms, monitoring his behavior at home would be sufficient.

“We can’t be mad at him; He’s a very lovable dog,” Clayton said. “People often tell us that there is a human trapped inside our dog,” the couple told The Washington Post.

Law enforcement began the unusual task of recovering the funds. They collected and washed all the scraps of banknotes they could salvage, both from the dog's feces and what it had vomited.

Despite the initial tragedy, the couple managed to rebuild for about $3,550. Not only did this incident take a financial toll, but it quickly became a viral phenomenon after the Laws shared a video chronicling the experience on Instagram, which received more than 175,000 likes.

“This is Cecil,” the couple’s social media post read. “He never did anything wrong in his life until he ate $4,000,” they wrote, drawing laughter and surprise from the thousands of users who witnessed the adorable dog's antics.

Other details of the incident include that the couple, wearing masks and gloves, patiently retrieved what was left of the money, a task that Carrie humorously described as “money laundering.”

“Here we were, waiting for the dog to go to the bathroom so we could rest,” Clayton Law said of the mission to get his winnings back. “We had to laugh at the absurdity of it,” he added.

In addition, the Laws mentioned that they plan to send the fragments of the banknotes that they were unable to recover to the US Treasury Department in order to recover some of the lost money. Nevertheless, the couple decided to keep some of the destroyed notes to frame them as a piece of art to commemorate this unique event.
