A Ukrainian attack killed 25 people in Belgorod, Russia, on December 30.

On Thursday, January 4, five days after the bombing, residents of Belgorod, Russia, mourn their dead. The city is still frozen in fear and trauma. The city was hit right at the heart during the holidays when the streets were packed. The official report shows around a hundred injured and 25 dead. 76-year-old Vladimir waited for the bus with his wife and narrowly escaped death.

Schools will not reopen until January 19th

The Ukrainians have not made any official comment. During the attack, injured people fled to a hairdressing salon. Traumatized, she tells how a child died on her sofa. When the killed Ukrainian civilians are mentioned, she echoes the official Russian discourse. “We did not specifically target civilians. The difference is that they do it on purpose,” she assures. In Belgorod, the shootings in this border region did not stop. Many shops remain closed and schools will not reopen until January 19th.
