A 16monthold boy had cancer in his kidney that had taken over virtually the entire organ. The baby had to undergo emergency surgery
A 16monthold English baby has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer after his mother noticed his urine was becoming darker and had a strong smell. Little Jaxon Hart was diagnosed with Wilms tumor, an aggressive form of kidney disease that primarily affects children under the age of six.
“My son peed in the hospital and it was as dark as CocaCola. Doctors took him for an ultrasound scan, which revealed a twoinch mass on his kidney. It was almost the entire right organ,” recalled the boy’s mother, Stacie Hart, in an interview with the Chron.
rare cancer
Wilms tumor is a rare type of cancer, although it accounts for the majority of kidney tumor diagnoses in children.
The tumor is formed by stem cells that normally specialize and become cells of different types. In healthy patients, the kidneys continue to mature until the age of around four years.
In children with Wilms tumor, these cells no longer specialize and continue to multiply, forming malignant tumors.
Tumors grow quickly and do not show any specific symptoms in the early stages, which is why they are often diagnosed late. In more serious cases, metastases can occur, especially in the lungs, according to the National Cancer Institute (Inca).
The boy suffered from a persistent cough and urine that became increasingly dark and had an intense smell. Doctors suspected metastases in the lungs, which would justify the severe cough, but determined that the symptom was related to an infection resulting from kidney failure.
The baby had her kidney removed and underwent five sessions of chemotherapy before surgery. After the procedure, Jaxon underwent another month of therapy taken together, the treatment worked and all signs of the tumor disappeared. Now, at 19 months, Jaxon is healthy.
