A North Korea fired more than 200 shots near the maritime border with South Korea this Friday the 5th. As a result, residents of two South Korean islands were ordered to seek shelter and evacuate the area. The Ministry of Defense of South Korea did not confirm whether the order was motivated by the shooting or the South Korean army's military exercises conducted in response. Nevertheless, a text message sent to residents said that South Korean troops would engage in “naval fire” starting at 3 p.m. this Friday. An official on Yeonpyeong Island, which lies south of the disputed Northern Limit Line (NLL) on the maritime border, said the evacuation was ordered at the request of the army.

According to the South Korean army, the North Korean fire caused no civilian or military damage in the South. However, Lee Sungjoon, spokesman for South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the provocation is increasing tensions and endangering peace on the Korean peninsula. He warned that the South would take “appropriate measures” in response to the North’s actions. The North Koreans have warned in recent days that the situation on the peninsula is heading toward war amid moves by the U.S. and South Korean military. Both countries promise devastating military responses if attacked.
