Winter storm causes flooding and snowfall in Northern Europe

British authorities declared this Thursday (4) a “major disaster situation” after strong storms hit the central region of England. Around 250 flood warnings have been issued across the UK.

The situation was similar in northern France, where houses and streets were flooded in several cities. Hundreds of people had to leave their homes.

In Belgium, train services stopped operating due to rising water levels. The management company said passengers would have to take a replacement bus between Marbehan and Libramont until the weekend while it assessed the safety of the area.

In neighboring Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised to help parts of Germany affected by floods. He visited Berga, where residents built sandbanks to contain floods.

“It is very impressive to see how solidarity here helps to ensure the safety of citizens and the entire landscape. “Countless citizens, but also aid organizations and state institutions have been working hard for many, many days,” said the Chancellor.

Hundreds of cars got stuck in the snow on the E22 motorway in southern Sweden overnight.

“I waited here for 12, almost 13 hours,” said driver Petra Bentz.
