162,000 people have already renegotiated debts with Fies GOV.BR

“Desenrola do Fies” has already given 162,600 people the opportunity to pay off their debts to the Student Financing Fund (Fies). The sanction of Law No. 14,719/2023 allowed Brazilian men and women with debts arising from contracts signed up to 2017 and in default with Fies on June 30, 2023 to pay off their debts with discounts of up to 99% on the consolidated value of debt and up to 100% renegotiation discount on fees.

The renegotiations began on November 7, 2023. Almost two months after the launch of the program, more than R$ 300 million has already been returned to the state treasury, representing R$ 7.1 billion in renegotiated debt. The balance is as of January 3, 2024 and is based on data collected by the Ministry of Education (MEC) through the National Education Development Fund (FNDE) from financial agents.

Renegotiation Desenrola do Fies is an initiative of the Federal Government through MEC and FNDE so that students can regulate their insolvency and organize their financial future. The terms of renegotiation are governed by Law No. 14,719/2023, approved by the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on November 1, in addition to the regulation by Resolution No. 55 of November 6, 2023, which sets the criteria for the renegotiation of debts.

Students with Fies debt must request a renegotiation with the financial agent with whom they have a contract by May 31, 2024. The program offers discounts of up to 99% on the consolidated value of debt and up to 100% interest reduction. Caixa Econômica Federal and Banco do Brasil (BB) have been receiving renegotiation requests through various channels since November 7, 2023.
