In summer, holidaymakers compete every morning in a hectic race for the deck chairs at the hotel swimming pools. Hotel guests who arrive late are often left without lounge chairs all day.

While vacationing at a hotel in Rhodes, Greece, a German family was unable to use the pool loungers for the entirety of their stay due to this practice. They decided to file a complaint against the hotel and were successful.

Since there are no sun loungers available to them during their stay, they file a lawsuit against their hotel

The members of this family spent a total of 5,260 euros on their stay last summer, but did not get the experience they had hoped for. They stayed at the Hotel TUI Kids Club Atlantica Mikri Poli, whose facility is equipped with around 500 sun loungers.

To discourage vacationers who reserve lounge chairs at dawn and leave towels there, the hotel applies a strict policy and completely prohibits this practice to its guests.

However, German holidaymakers claimed that hotel staff did not enforce this rule to the letter, pointing out that they were unable to use the lounge chairs throughout their stay.

According to the Bild newspaper, they filed a complaint against the hotel. According to court documents cited by the same newspaper, the members of this family found no free deckchairs when they went to the swimming pool.

The court awards the family compensation of 322.77 euros

On Thursday, January 4, 2024, a judge at the Hanover Regional Court (in Germany) ruled that the hotel had deprived the family of part of their vacation. He therefore granted the family members a right to compensation in the amount of 322.77 euros.

The judgment in favor of the family is not final and can still be appealed by both parties.

In summer, hotels are the scene of veritable deck chair battles. Customers get up at dawn to reserve the best seats. When the swimming pools open, they frantically run towards the loungers, leading to unusual scenes of incivility.
