Minnesota forward Grace Zumwinkle scored a hat trick, becoming the first player to achieve such a feat in the circuit's short history. In the third period, the 24-year-old deflected a shot from the blue line to deceive the alertness of Ann-Renée Desbiens. She completed her hat-trick in an empty net.
Marie-Philip Poulin's teammates can only blame themselves as they had three power play opportunities in the second period but were unable to capitalize on their chances with an extra field player.
The last engagement turned out to be completely to the advantage of the local heroes. In fact, Montreal shot itself in the foot by being penalized four times, allowing Minnesota to gain tempo and shoot Desbiens 10 times.
Kori Cheverie's players sent just three pucks toward Maddie Rooney's net in the third period, allowing her to post a 24-save shutout. Desbiens stopped 19 shots.
Montreal will look to return to victory against New York on Wednesday at UBS Arena. Minnesota hosts Toronto on the same day.
