Donald Trump has not signed the pledge not to overthrow the government that the state of Illinois requires of all candidates in the March 19 primary election. This emerges from documents filed by the former American president the day after the third anniversary of the insurrection of January 6, 2021, when his supporters attacked the Capitol to prevent the certification of President Joe Biden's victory.
The traditional oath of loyalty
The pledge is contained in an oath of allegiance that is traditionally required of all candidates in Illinois but is not necessarily mandatory. Trump signed it during his 2016 and 2020 campaigns. In the oath, the candidates affirm that they are not affiliated with any communist organization or “a foreign political agency, party, organization or government that advocates the violent overthrow of the government.” .

Trump was well ahead in the Republican primary polls and told a rally in Iowa last night that the January 6 rioters now in prison were “hostages” and should be released immediately. “The January 6 hostages must be released. They suffered. Some call them prisoners. I call them hostages. Release the January 6th hostages, Joe. You can do it easily,” Trump said, addressing President Joe Biden.
Trump, whom Biden calls “a threat to democracy,” has been indicted in four lawsuits over his business activities and his role in the Jan. 6 attack. Additionally, the Supreme Court must rule on February 8 on Colorado's decision not to allow Trump to run in the primary because he was involved in an insurrection.
