HISTORY – Both candidates invoked the state of American democracy and the events of January 6, 2021 during a series of campaign rallies.

American democracy is at stake. Three years after the attack on the Capitol by Trumpist activists, the event of January 6, 2021 is the focus of the new election campaign that is beginning. Once again, Joe Biden and Donald Trump face off and argue about the true meaning of this day that continues to shake the American political system. Having become an acronym, “J6” makes it clear to the two opponents what the election is about. Biden uses January 6th as a symbol of the danger of authoritarianism embodied by Trump, which he believes still threatens America. Donald Trump portrays January 6 as a patriotic insurrection in the face of what he continues to denounce as a stolen election despite the odds, and portrays the insurrection participants as martyrs and victims of political repression.
