The 81st Golden Globe Awards
Jo Koy opened his first hosting gig at the Golden Globes on Sunday with a monologue referencing the size of “Saltburn” star Barry Keoghan's penis and Ozempic in front of top Hollywood talent, drawing mixed reactions on his jokes.
“Some I wrote, some others wrote,” the stand-up comedian said after one of his lines faltered. “Yes, I got the gig 10 days ago! Do you want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You're kidding me, right? Slow it down, some of them I wrote and you’re the one you’re laughing at.”
Koy was announced as this year's host on December 21, just under a month before the awards show aired on CBS on January 7.
A big laugh for Koy came when he joked about Saltburn star Barry Keoghan's long nude dance scene and made several references to the size of his character's genitals in the film, asking Keoghan from the stage: “Where is your penis?” Bottom front? That was the real star of the show.”
The comedian joked about many of the top tracks nominated at the awards show, including “The Color Purple,” which he says is about “what happens to your butt when you take Ozempic.”
Koy noted that “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” are competing for box office success tonight before comparing the two this way: “'Oppenheimer' is based on the 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project – and 'Barbie' is about a plastic doll with big breasts.”
On “Barbie,” Koy said “it was kind of weird being attracted to a plastic doll” while watching the Margot Robbie-directed Greta Gerwig film, quickly adding, “Just something with your eyes, Ryan.” while staring at Robbie Ken, Ryan Gosling.
“The defining moment in 'Barbie' is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite and flat feet – or what casting directors call character acting,” Koy said, groaning. (This particular joke was the catalyst for his response, “I got the job 10 days ago.”)
“I loved 'Oppenheimer,' I only have one complaint: it needed another hour, I feel like it needed a little more backstory,” Koy said of Christopher Nolan's hit. “My New Year's resolution for 2024 is to finish 'Oppenheimer' in 2025.”
Koy said the lesson he learned from Martin Scorsese's “Killers of the Flower Moon” was: “White people stole everything.” “Not like 97%, you stole 100% of everything. You took the land, you took the oil, you took the premise of the film,” Koy said, adding after a mixed reaction from the audience: “What, that was your premise? That's hilarious, I don't care. It’s just that the room is really white.”
The Globes are currently airing live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
“Funny Is Funny World Tour” star Koy has released five stand-up specials on Comedy Central and Netflix, including his 2022 Netflix special “Live From The Los Angeles Forum.”
Additionally, Koy starred in Universal Picture's 2022 film “Easter Sunday,” based on his own experiences and stand-up comedy. He most recently appeared in Disney's “Haunted Mansion” film and had voice roles in “Monkey King” and “Leo” on Netflix.
