The Provincial Court of Las Palmas has sentenced the mayor of Arrecife (Lanzarote), Isabel Déniz, to ten and a half years in prison and 42 years of disqualification from holding office between 2001 and 2007, deeming her the author of two crimes of fraud against the administration, two for bribery and two for subterfuge.
This Monday, the court published the verdict on the final part of the Unión case, a bribery scheme by company executives towards political and public officials in Lanzarote in order to obtain preferential treatment in the awarding of contracts in the capital's town hall. insular.
The verdict includes convictions for 9 of the 16 defendants, including former president of the Lanzarote Cabildo and founder of the Lanzarote Independent Party (PIL), Dimas Martín, adding a new prison sentence of two and a half years to his criminal record. and 12 of disqualification for fraud against the administration and bribery, all with the mitigating circumstance that she pleaded guilty, unlike what Isabel Déniz did, who denied having committed any crime.
The former head of the Arrecife Technical Office was also convicted, who admitted the crimes he was accused of during the hearing. His sentence is increased to three and a half years, plus a disqualification for fraud, subterfuge, bribery and disclosing secrets. The remaining convicts are representatives of Urbaser (Tecmed) and FCC.
Déniz, who was a councilor for the PIL, was also a deputy in the Parliament of the Canary Islands. Another arrested is the socialist Miguel Ángel Leal, former councilor of the Cabildo. The case occurred in 2010, when Déniz himself, Dimas Martín and six other people from different political parties were arrested in a notorious Guardia Civil operation.
