Golden Globes 2024
The stand-up comedian and actor has spoken out about his unpopular performance, describing it as “a bad night”.
Comedian Jo Koy has responded to criticism of his hosting gig at this year's Golden Globes.
The last-minute choice for the role sparked a negative reaction online and reportedly in the room with an unnamed prominent director reference called it “a disaster” and Vanity Fair's Richard Lawson called his opening monologue “a terrible, sophomoric mix of lazy jokes.”

Koy, known as a standup and actor, appeared on ABC's GMA3: What You Need to Know and addressed the reaction.
“I had fun,” he said. “You know, it was a moment I will always remember. It's a hard space. It was hard work, I'm not going to lie… I'd be lying if [I said] It doesn’t hurt…hosting is just a hard job. Yes, I am a standup comedian, but the hosting position is a different style. I sort of went in and took over the writing thing. We had 10 days to write this monologue. It was a crash course. I feel bad, but I still have to say I loved what I did.”

Koy's jokes ranged from comments on Saltbun star Barry Keoghan's nudity (“Where is your penis?”) to Ozempic (“The color purple is what happens to your butt when you take Ozempic”) to the length of Oppenheimer ( “I only have one complaint: it took another hour”) and Barbie (“based on a plastic doll with big breasts”).
He also made a joke about Taylor Swift, who was nominated for box office and box office success for her film “Eras Tour,” and her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. “As you know, we came on after a double header in football,” he said. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? We have less camera footage of Taylor Swift at the Golden Globes, I swear.”
This led to an immediate, unimpressed reaction from the star, which quickly spread online.
When asked about moments during the show that he regretted, he said: “I think it was when the Taylor [Swift] one was just a little flat… That was probably a funny joke. But it was more about the NFL… I tried to use cutaways to make fun of the NFL and how the Globes didn't have to do that. So it was more of a dig at the NFL. But it just didn’t come across that way.”
Koy summed it up as “a bad night” and that he “came up a little short”, but he was still proud. “I wanted to give a little more of myself,” he added.
This year's ceremony was dominated by wins for Oppenheimer and Succession. Viewership numbers for the ceremony are not yet available.
