Turin, Spazio 7, the main exhibition of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation, ends. The chef: “I was the only one who believed it”

The first sign came on December 13th last year, when chef Antonio Romano, a Michelin star, at Spazio7 (the restaurant of Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation) had surprisingly published a job advertisement on the Linkedin website. Today, Tuesday January 9th, the unofficial confirmation came in the sense that, in the absence of any communication from the owners, the announcement arrived from the chef himself on Facebook.

“On December 25th – writes Romano – the Spazio7 kitchen turned on the stove for the last lunch, Christmas dinner, thus closing the doors for good (at least according to my information)”. This is followed by thanks to the employees and customers as well as to the company itself Michelin guide which confirmed the star in 2023. Then the story of a fate seems to be sealed: “Unfortunately, the Spazio7 restaurant never developed as I would have liked.” Despite the knowledge of operating in a “complicated” city In many ways, I always gave my all to achieve the goals I set. What remains is the bitterness of having been the only one who fully believed in this project and tried it to the end.”

After 2023 Sparse selection of stars in the highest international kitchen guideThis brings about the closure of one of the most innovative and ambitious spaces in the city, at the center of the new international trend of “museum restaurants” in an important Turin cultural institution. It should be noted that reservations on the website are apparently still open (from March 2024) and that on the venue's official social networks, the last post with best wishes for 2024 is from January 1st.

The chef, who had important experience abroad and in Rome with Heinz Beck at Spazio 7 on a permanent contract, was about to complete two years of work on this project (he had succeeded Alessandro Mecca). For the foundation's restaurant he moved to Turin, a city where he still wanted to stay.
