The US and seven other countries have accused Russia of acquiring North Korean missiles for use in the Ukraine war and thus abusing its position on the UN Security Council. Yesterday's declaration was also signed by Great Britain, France, Malta, Slovenia, South Korea, Japan and Ukraine.
“It is abhorrent that a permanent member of the UN Security Council would flagrantly violate Council resolutions to attack another UN member,” U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood told the council. The process undermines, among other things, the global system of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
No explicit denial of Russia
Russian ambassador to the UN, Wassili Nebensja, said, however, that it was apparently false information. A representative of the Ukrainian Air Force said there was no evidence of the use of the missiles. However, Nebensja did not explicitly deny it.
On Thursday, the United States accused North Korea of supplying Russia with ballistic missiles and launchers, citing intelligence findings. The governments of Moscow and Pyongyang have denied arms deals. However, they announced that they would deepen their military cooperation.
More aid from NATO countries to Ukraine
Meanwhile, NATO countries promised Ukraine more military aid against Russia after the first NATO-Ukraine Council this year. “Many allies have revealed plans to provide billions of dollars in additional capabilities in 2024,” he said in a statement. The alliance did not provide details.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned his partners about declining support during a visit to the Baltic countries. “Sometimes our partners’ hesitation regarding financial and military support for Ukraine only leads to Russia becoming bolder and stronger,” he said in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.
