The 2024 tax season begins on January 29th and with it the collection of documents, information and everything that goes with filing tax returns.

To avoid penalties or delays on your tax returns this tax season, it's important to know the most important IRS deadlines.

JANUARY

  • January 12th: IRS Free File begins. The IRS Free File Guided Tax Software tool, available only on IRS.gov, is available to any taxpayer or family with an adjusted gross income of $79,000 or less in 2023.
  • January 16: Fourth quarter 2023 estimated tax payment due date.
  • January 26th: Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day.
  • January 29th: Tax filing season start date for individual tax returns.
    • Free File Fill Forms will be available for free to all income levels starting January 29th and will provide electronic forms that people can also complete and submit electronically for free.

FEBRUARY

  • February 17th: Most taxpayers who filed early should be able to see their updated “Where’s my refund” status starting February 17th.
  • 27th of February: The IRS expects most EITC/ACTC-related refunds to be available in taxpayers' bank accounts or debit cards by February 27 if they elected direct deposit. Although the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, it warns taxpayers not to rely on receiving the refund by a specific date

The easiest way to check the status of a refund is to use “Where’s my refund?” on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go app.

APRIL

  • April 15: Deadline to file your tax return or request an extension for most of the country.
    • Deadline for those who pay taxes quarterly, from January 1st to March 31st.
  • 17th April: Expiration dates for Maine and Massachusetts.
    • If a taxpayer lives in a federally designated disaster area, they may also have more time to file their paperwork. More information can be found here.

JUNE

  • 15th June: Deadline for those who pay taxes quarterly, from April 1st to May 31st.

SEPTEMBER

  • September 15th: Deadline for those who pay taxes quarterly, from June 1st to August 31st.

OCTOBER

  • 15th October: Deadline for applicants to apply for an extension.
