The Snow Society: Understand Why Survivors' Urine Turned Black

“The Snow Society”, which appeared on Netflix last Thursday (4), has got people talking. The film tells the story of a real plane crash in 1972 in a remote area of the Andes, in which only 16 of the 45 crew members remained alive. The production explores the lack of food and water and the extreme conditions endured by the survivors of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571.

Director Juan Antonio Bayona's film was inspired by author Pablo Vierci's book of the same name and shows how the 16 passengers withstood the fall and fought for their lives for days in extreme weather conditions such as snow and cold. To do this, they had to feed on human flesh, i.e. the bodies of their comrades who did not survive the accident.

As reported in the production, living in conditions such as those mentioned above can cause the body to react unexpectedly and develop various symptoms. One of the most talked about scenes in the production is the moment the survivors are shocked to notice the piss coming out black.

Dark urine is a symptom of rhabdomyolysis. The disease, considered rare, is caused by the release of a substance called myoglobin, which is present in the muscles. The condition can occur when the body is exposed to excessive physical exertion or severe muscle injuries, such as those that occur in car accidents.

Rhabdomyolysis can also occur with abuse of substances such as alcohol and drugs, including heroin, taking medications for a long time, severe dehydration, electrical shock injuries, and edema leading to cell destruction, among others. In November last year, influencer Kamila Rigobeli suffered from the same illness.

In the film, passengers trapped in the Andes are subjected to severe malnutrition and dehydration, causing a loss of potassium and electrolytes, leading to cases of rhabdomyolysis.

Specialist Gustavo Ferreira, nephrologist, former president and member of the Advisory Board of ABTO (Brazilian Organ Transplant Association), explained to UOL that, strictly speaking, the complications of the disease are all related to dark urine: “When it comes into contact with the kidneys, this substance is released Kidney damage. Dehydration and malnutrition lead to serious illnesses that damage the kidneys. After a very long period of time without fluid intake, the patient suffers kidney failure, which leads to death.”

According to the specialist, treatment depends on the symptoms that the disease leaves behind. These can range from muscle pain and stiffness, difficulty moving, joint pain, weakness, general fatigue, nausea and vomiting, kidney pain and more. Hospitalization is the most recommended method to replace the necessary fluids and to offer intensive support or not depending on the severity of the patient's case.

“The Snow Society” is available on Netflix. The production mixes truth and fiction to delve deeper into one of the most powerful tragedies of the 20th century. Watch the trailer below:
