Costa Rica calls for a reform of the current legal framework to fight crime

In a press conference after the government council, the president called on us to “stop with romantic illusions of rehabilitation.” The kitchen is burning and we will not be able to put out the fire with the existing legal framework. Look in the mirror at what is unfortunately happening in Ecuador, he reflected.

He described the current legal framework that applies to suspects and convicts of violent crimes as “marshmallow laws.” Efforts must be made to “protect” members of drug trafficking organizations that increase murder rates in the country, he stressed.

In other posts, Chaves explained that it was necessary to cut alternative services to prison, increase the grounds for preventive detention and some penalties, which would lead to an increase in the number of people deprived of their liberty.

To counteract this, the government plans to build a new prison, an aspect confirmed by Justice Minister Gerald Campos. The implementation of this work has been analyzed since last year, he emphasized.

The president also referred to that project, although he tried to avoid the term “megaprison,” which is associated with the project in neighboring El Salvador.

We are working on a “smart” prison that allows members and leaders of criminal organizations to be completely isolated. Set a good budget if we need it because you must have a strong hand.

It's one thing to have hitmen who are experts in the use of weapons and even experts in combat techniques who are not ordinary criminals.
