Lula could appoint a new Brazilian justice minister

According to the official agenda of the Presidential Palace, this appointment also includes the current holder of this portfolio, Flavio Dino, who will leave his post to accept the new position of member of the STF.

The former governor of the state of Maranhão (Northeast) has been confirmed by the Federal Senate and will take over Rosa Weber's seat on the Supreme Court. His investiture is scheduled for February 22nd.

Lewandowski had a meeting with Lula last night at the Alvorada Palace, the leaders' official residence in Brasilia, where Dino was also present, to discuss the latest details of the appointment of the new justice minister.

The former Supreme Court justice, who retired from the court in April after turning 75, was Lula's favorite for the ministry.

According to journalistic media, Lewandowski met the founder of the Workers' Party when he was a trade unionist (1970s), in the municipality of Sao Bernardo do Campo, southeast zone of Greater Sao Paulo, better known as ABC Paulista.

Since Dino was nominated to the Supreme Court, several names have been mentioned to replace him in government.

Among them were Ricardo Cappelli, executive secretary of the Ministry of Justice, and Jorge Messias, Attorney General of the Union.

Capelli, who will speak with Dino this Thursday, told his allies that he does not want to seek any position other than that of the National Secretariat of Public Security.

The former STF judge wants to have autonomy if elected justice minister and have someone he trusts as secretary.

For his part, the head of state is interested in retaining Capelli, the current holder of the post.
