China described William Lai, the Democratic Progressive Party's presidential candidate, as a “great danger” in Taipei on Saturday. Chen Binhua, spokesman for the Chinese government's Taiwan Affairs Office, “expressed his hope that compatriots in Taiwan will recognize the grave danger of Lai's incitement of cross-strait conflict and make the right choice at the crossroads,” it said in a statement carried by state media, repeating Beijing's arguments that the island's crucial vote is a choice between “peace and war.” China calls Lai a “troublemaker” with pro-independence positions.
