RCMP investigate knife attack at Chicoutimi restaurant –

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirms it is involved in the investigation into events at La Belle et la Bœuf restaurant last December, as first reported by La Presse.

Ahmed May is accused of attempted murder of three people. He is also accused of assaulting police officers and obstructing the work of peace officers.

The stabbing happened in the middle of the afternoon on December 20th. Employees were injured. The 30-year-old defendant also worked at the restaurant.

The RCMP Integrated National Security Team (INST) is working with the Saguenay Police Service to determine whether or not there is a national security (terrorism)-related component. We can read a response sent via email.

These are Facebook publications by the defendant that promote Hamas and aroused the suspicion of the national police.

Ahmed May's lawyer rejects the theory of a terrorist attack and asks not to jump to conclusions.

What is clear is that this is all the result of a working atmosphere that has deteriorated over the weeks and months. Obviously there is nothing that can excuse Mr. May's actions, but you will understand if you follow the course of the investigation and Mr. May will be able to provide explanations about the incident, claims Nicolas Gagnon.

The investigation is ongoing and the RCMP is not granting interviews at this time.

Ahmed May is due back at the Chicoutimi courthouse on Friday to conduct his bail hearings.
