Review of the film “La Petite”: a luminous drama carried by a touching Fabrice Luchini

Fabrice Luchini delivers a touching performance full of nuances and restraint in the moving drama The little one.

As a widowed and lonely carpenter, Joseph (Fabrice Luchini) suddenly learns of the death of his son Manuel and his companion in a plane accident.

Although he was not on good terms with his son, Joseph still held out hope that one day he could be reconciled with him. When he found out that Manuel and his partner were expecting a child from a surrogate mother in Belgium, the sixty-year-old decided to search for the young woman in the hope of being able to prolong his son's existence through this child. However, he has to convince his mother (Mara Taquin), a suspicious and unfriendly young woman.

Counter-employment

This beautiful film from French filmmaker Guillaume Nicloux (“A Private Affair”) is based on a novel by Fanny Chesnel and owes much to the performance of Fabrice Luchini, who stuns in an incongruous role. Far from the histrionics that we have become accustomed to in his recent comedies, the 72-year-old actor movingly reveals himself in the character of a fragile and lovable grandfather.

One of the film's great revelations is Belgian actress Mara Taquin, who contributes with a brilliant performance. Without revolutionizing anything, with La Petite Guillaume Nicloux presents a luminous drama that warms the heart.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5. La Petite, a film by Guillaume Nicloux with Fabrice Luchini, Mara Taquin and Maud Wyler. On the screen.
