On the prairie, Donald Trump is the favorite The Press

The first primaries for the next US presidency will take place in Iowa on Monday. A three-way battle is emerging among Republicans. According to polls, former President Trump is clearly ahead of Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley.

News from Iowa rarely reaches the rest of the world. There has to be a massacre or a whirlwind for this to happen. Otherwise, the US state between Mississippi and Missouri seems peaceful: the prairie there is wide, with rolling hills and lots of corn. But once every four years, “breaking news” comes from Iowa. Then the first presidential primaries will take place there.

Iowa has 3.2 million residents, just under 1% of the U.S. population. This seems almost insignificant. But candidates who score there have at least a small head start. This time, all eyes are on the Republicans, President Joe Biden's Democratic rivals. Will former President Donald Trump pull off a victory from start to finish?
