Activists respond to school shooting: 'It's very easy' for Miami kids to get guns

MIAMI, Florida. — Video emerged showing students fighting before a teenager pulled a gun and shot a 15-year-old boy in the parking lot of a Miami-Dade school campus Thursday night after a basketball game between Miami Central and Miami Northwestern high schools.

The shooting victim was identified as Devin Reeves and was at Jackson Memorial Hospital, police said. Police officers responded to a Shot Spotter alert and took the suspect into custody. Activist Renita Holmes said she was heartbroken.

“A kid going to school can get a gun from another kid, a kid can get a gun from an old man.” “They're out there,” said Holmes, who lives in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood, and added that it was “easy” for children to “get guns.”

Tangie Sands said she panicked and ran to Northwestern, 1100 NW 71st St., to see if her son was safe. She was, but she believes more needs to be done to protect students.

“Every child and every person who enters this school campus must be tested,” Sands said. He fears that without improvements “this will continue.”
