The 10th Legislature of the Congress of Guatemala will take office

The parliamentarians represent 17 blocs, including Vamos por una Guatemala Mejor (Vamos) with 39; the National Unit of Hope (UNE), 28; the Semilla Movement 23 and the political party Cabal 18.

The program includes the arrival of the representatives of the previous legislative session under the leadership of the Administrative Council chaired by Representative Shirley Rivera.

She will deliver a closing speech of her government and later the plenary session will approve a legislative agreement that will complete the period 2020-2024.

The Provisional Debating Body will be responsible for conducting the election and swearing-in of the 2024-2025 Board of Directors.

In a maneuver last Friday, the Standing Commission of Congress declared the deputies of the Semilla party, the big winner of the presidential elections, independent.

The group's elected representative, Andrea Reyes, stated that the bank is strong and ready to take power.

“Faced with the desperate attempts of those opposing the changes in Congress, we are submitting an injunction to protect our rights,” he said.

“We are sure that their attempt to block Semilla and the changes demanded by the people will fail, as on other occasions,” Reyes noted.

The country's elected president, Bernardo Arévalo, acknowledged last night that there were already agreements in place to integrate the board of directors, explaining that for this purpose “there were no false negotiations, as was usual.”

He declined the offer of any position, political office or governorship in a department, since in the latter case it was a matter of selection by the citizens and not by the President.

“The government neither negotiates contracts nor positions, nor does it buy votes, nor does it resort to the mechanisms it uses,” admitted the professional sociologist.

“We have put forward a proposal to reach an agreement in Congress, based on the awareness among representatives that the people have given a clear mandate for change,” he explained.

The Cabal party of former presidential candidate Edmont Mulet announced the day before a government agreement with Arévalo for the election of the executive board of the Guatemalan Congress.
