This is a preliminary bill aimed at funding the executive branch in the short term until next March and thus avoiding its closure, the North American press reported.
According to CNN, the legislative initiative, with an initial funding deadline of March 1st and a further deadline of March 8th, will prevent a closure of public administration before funds run out starting next Friday.
As of January 19, funds for about 20% of the government's budget are depleted, including those earmarked for areas such as support for veterans, while the rest of the funds run out on February 2.
The pact reaffirms what was agreed last week between the majority leader of the Senate (upper house of Congress), Democrat Chuck Schumer, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives (lower house), Republican Mike Johnson, to increase the maximum spending cap on the Budget year 2024 at 1.66 billion dollars (around 1.51 billion euros).
This figure includes $886 billion (€808 billion) in military spending and $704 billion (€642 billion) in nonmilitary spending.
However, the most rightwing part of the Republican Party criticized the agreement and demanded the inclusion of restrictions on immigration funds in return for the proposal's acceptance.
House Republicans are holding a video conference tonight to discuss this agreement, the press said.
Mike Johnson, who said Friday that the agreement remained in effect, said last week that it made “significant changes” from negotiations that began in June and that it was “more than $16 billion ($14.6 billion). Euro) additional “there will be spending cuts to balance the level of discretionary spending.”
