The paths of the Universitario de Deportes and Christofer Gonzales are about to cross. Since the beginning of the Peruvian football transfer market, the top team has been planning the arrival of Canchita, a project that will become a reality in a few days.
One of the main reasons that prevented the arrival of the Ate national midfielder was his contract with Al-Adalah, the club that had held his passport since his arrival in July 2022. However, the also member of the Peruvian team managed to separate himself from the Arab group.
Few details are needed for Gonzales to remain a free agent and sign with the current national soccer champions. The 31-year-old player's arrival is part of the elite institution's plan for the 100th anniversary of its founding.
This setting also means Christofer's return after eight years. Canchita has fond memories of her first phase with the student occupation. One of its highlights was the 2013 season, in which the “U” was crowned champions after defeating Garcilaso in the final.
After leaving Universitario in 2015, he played for other local teams such as Sporting Cristal and Melgar, as well as abroad for Colo Colo and Al-Adalah.
After a long football journey, which also included several encounters with the Peruvian team in qualifying and the Copa América, Gonzales will return to the club that gave him the opportunity to develop professionally. The midfielder would arrive in Lima today to finalize the final details of his contract.
At the moment, the top-flight team is sweating hard in pre-season to get to the best possible conditions for the start of the season as they aim for their second consecutive Liga 1 title and advance to the knockout phase of the Copa Libertadores.
The team led by Fabián Bustos will play a friendly match against Atlético Nacional today (6:00 p.m.) at the DRV PNK Stadium in Miami.
The current sovereign of Peruvian football will then face Coquimbo Unidos on January 20th at the Monumental Stadium for Noche Crema. The expectations for Universitario are high and the participation of Christofer Gonzales will be crucial in achieving the goals set.
